Pain is temporary. Pain is weakness leaving the body. No pain, no gain.
In my opinion, the experience of being in physical pain has become far too normalised, particularly for those of us with vaginas.
I am going to call on the absolutely cracking script of Fleabag a lá Phoebe Waller-Bridge; “Women are born with pain built in. It’s our physical destiny – period pains, sore boobs, childbirth. We carry it within ourselves throughout our lives”.
There is so much more to this brilliant scene but I cherry-picked this quote because I truly can’t put it into better words myself.
We are taught from a very young age that pain will feature heavily in our lives, and so we begin to feel resigned to pain.
We fear it yet accept it.
We dread it yet succumb to it.
We battle and suffer through it, and then minimise it.
We brush it off with excuses and exclamations of “it’s not that bad”. But really, it often is that bad…
